The Magic of Sand

Sand

Sand is one of our favourite resources. Not only is it a loose part but it is also a natural resource, so fits in so well with our outdoor learning ethos.

Why we provide sand in our learning environments

Sand offers a great sensory experience for children and has been used as part of a 'sand therapy' programme. The feel of it can be so different, the coolness of it under your bare feet, the sensation as you watch it run through things and the very quiet sound that it can make as it trickles through a sieve- all provide children with a great sensory experience. Think about those times that you have been on a sandy beach and have wanted to take your flip flops off so that you can feel the sand between your toes- it is an amazing feeling isn't it?

Imagine being a child and being able to explore the sand in this way - having the space to feel it on your body.

Sand provides children with an open-ended material that they are able to use in their own way, using their imagination and creativity. As children explore sand, they have the opportunity to experience the different textures of wet sand and dry sand.

How can I add sand play into my home for my child?

Sand is so much more than just offering it in a sand tray. Children need to understand the 'connectedness' of our natural elements. We are lucky enough to live near the beach. Our beaches provide us with wet and dry sand at different times of the day. Why not check the tide times to see when low tide is and plan a visit to the beach?

Children can begin to learn where the natural element comes from and its purpose. They can begin to understand that wet sand is better for building and moulding with, whereas dry sand is better for pouring and filling up different containers.

If you have a garden at home and would like to offer your chid sand outside, then there are plenty of ways to do this. Try to avoid a sand tray that only allows your child to stand at it. Try and think of ways to offer it on the floor so that they can explore the sand with their whole bodies. Above is a picture of some tarpaulin laid on the ground with sand on top. At night is covered over with another sheet of tarpaulin.

If you are good with tools then you can also use some decking strips to fix together into a square or rectangular shape, to allow the child to be able to sit inside the sand pit. You do not have to spend lots of money on a sand tray.

Sand needs to be explored and investigated by children and I have seen the benefits to the children that attend our setting. I have seen the children become engrossed in their play using the sand.

Sand doesn't always have to be on a large scale. You can offer sand in a much smaller way, outside or inside (if you do not have a garden). You can use cup cake baking trays, small trays, bowls etc, with dry sand. We always offer children authentic resources to add to their sand play, such as jugs, sieves, cups, measuring spoons, tea strainers etc. All of this will help strengthen their fine motor skills that will prepare them for writing.

If you would be interested in purchasing a 'sand resource' box for you to use at home, then please email us: saffronsparknursery@gmail.com to express your interest.
